Hand carved wooden chair. The Makonde are an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique.
Across Tanzania many different groups of people make similar chairs with the back, seat and legs all carved from one piece of wood. They are usually made in an upright style with incised design and this one has hands carved into the back rest with a sculptured head surmounting the backrest.
This represents an ancestor who may be called upon for protection, prosperity or good luck.
