Traditionally, the stands are partially buried in the ground, ensuring the pots' contents remain clean while maximizing space within Nupe homes. Entire walls in these homes are often lined with rows of such supports, each fully stacked with pots. Many of these stands exhibit signs of their subterranean placement, with encrustations and darkened upper portions resulting from exposure to smoke from cooking and household fires.
